My yoga teacher read us this last week as we lay halfway through our Bikram class in our savasana break, panting, sweating and trying to bring our hearts back under control:
Let us rise up and be thankful,
for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little,
and if we didn’t learn a little,
at least we didn’t get sick,
and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die;
so, let us all be thankful.
– The Buddha
You would think it would may be hard to get some perspective in a Bikram class, and sometimes you’d be right. But on the day it just made me giggle (everything seems funnier to me once I’ve reached that savasana, so much giggle happens. And then we roll over and start the floor series…).
What I really like about this is the call to action at the top; it isn’t about being thankful as you lie in bed at the end of the day and drift off to sleep. It says “Let us rise up“, everybody come together and be thankful with energy, because being thankful that you’re still alive at the end of the day, no matter what happened, that’s something to celebrate with verve!
